A Rotary Youth Exchange student from Germany, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Bainbridge, recently had the opportunity to spend a full day at the New York State Capitol in Albany, shadowing New York State Assemblymember Joe Angelino. The visit provided an in-depth look at the daily responsibilities of a New York State Assemblymember and offered meaningful insight into the legislative process.
From 10:00 a.m. until late afternoon, the student observed a broad cross-section of public service in action. In Assemblymember Angelino’s office, the student sat in on a scheduled meeting with a lobbyist, gaining firsthand exposure to how perspectives are presented and considered within the policymaking process. The student also attended a press conference held by several Republican members of the Assembly addressing new energy-related legislative initiatives, witnessing how elected officials communicate policy positions to the public.
During a live Assembly session, the student observed proceedings from the chamber and had the opportunity to greet several members. The experience provided a tangible understanding of the formality, structure, and decorum of the legislative body.
Assemblymember Angelino also provided a tour of the Capitol building, sharing highlights of its history and architectural features. The Capitol’s rich heritage and craftsmanship added historical context to the day’s legislative observations and left a strong impression.
Throughout the visit, the student was welcomed into discussions and encouraged to ask questions about the duties, time commitments, and responsibilities associated with serving in state government. The experience offered not only civic education but also a personal look at public service in practice.
Accompanying the student for the day was Bainbridge Rotarian and host parent John Gliha. For a young person participating in Rotary Youth Exchange, opportunities such as this broaden understanding and create lasting memories. The Rotary Club of Bainbridge appreciates Assemblymember Angelino’s thoughtful engagement and the time he devoted to providing an in-depth and meaningful educational experience.
