Rotary’s policies make a clear distinction between informed discussion and political advocacy. A club may host a speaker to discuss a public issue, but the club should not express an opinion on a pending controversial public measure, endorse or recommend a candidate, or discuss the merits or demerits of a candidate at a club meeting. Rotary and its clubs also must refrain from partisan political statements and cannot use the Rotary name or emblem to further a political campaign.
So, what can club leaders do? Rotary recommends planning ahead. Establish clear guidelines for social media and other communications made on behalf of the club, review your bylaws, and identify who will address questions or concerns that arise.
If your club invites politicians who are campaigning to speak, it is best practice to give all candidates the opportunity to address the club, either at the same meeting or at subsequent meetings. Do not have just one candidate speak in order to avoid the appearance of an endorsement or political support. This could mean having none speak if one or more are unwilling or unable to attend.
Review anticipated talking points, prepare for unexpected remarks, and carefully consider how Rotary banners and logos are displayed. Make it clear that a speaker's views are their own and do not represent the club.
